Match the token to its actual rights

Key takeaway

The same ecosystem can contain very different tokens.

One ecosystem, different rights

The same ecosystem can contain very different tokens. ONDO is the governance token of the Ondo DAO and Flux Finance. It is not an OUSG fund share or a USDY note. Holding ONDO does not by itself create a claim on the assets held for those products or entitle the holder to their yield.

Read the product, not just the brand

Ondo Finance documents tokenized financial products separately. OUSG provides exposure to a portfolio focused on short-term US government instruments; USDY is a different note structure. Each product has its own issuer, eligibility, documentation and redemption route. A common logo is not evidence of common legal rights.

Three layers to examine

Consider three layers when reading a product: the token recorded on a network, the documents defining the holder’s rights, and the assets and service providers supporting those rights. A successful blockchain transfer confirms an on-chain operation. It does not independently verify a custodian’s assets, a valuation or the holder’s eligibility.

A transfer is not a redemption

A token may move outside banking hours while cash settlement or a particular redemption route still has conditions and capacity limits. Check the exact product documents rather than treating all tokenized assets as stablecoins. For this guide, the important question is not “Which token has the best yield?” but “What does this specific token actually entitle its holder to do?”

Understand the details

Start with the identifier, then read the relevant documents. ONDO gives a governance role. OUSG and USDY have distinct product structures and access conditions. To assess a financial claim, identify who owes what, to whom, and under which redemption terms. A token balance is one item of evidence; it cannot replace the documents establishing a claim.

Boundaries and common mistakes

These distinctions explain how to read a product, not whether a particular person qualifies for it. Documentation, terms and supported networks can change; no yield or redemption entitlement is inferred from the brand name.

The distinction that changes the analysis

01Governance token
02Product entitlement

The same ecosystem name can appear on two holdings with different rights. Verifying 500 ONDO on-chain verifies a balance, not an ownership share in a Treasury portfolio. Match the exact token with the documents that define its role.

Explain it yourself

Revisit the case above. Name what is established, what remains to be checked and the evidence needed to conclude. A strong answer addresses both sides of the diagram.

Apply the lesson to a case

A fictional inventory lists 500 ONDO in a wallet. A note beside it says “500 claims on the Treasury portfolio”. You are asked to approve that description, and the only supporting document is the ONDO governance-token page.

What is the defensible conclusion from this evidence?
