Key takeaway

Issuance is only the first event in a security’s life.

The essentials

Issuance is only the first event in a security’s life. A tokenized instrument also needs subscription, allocation, settlement, income payments, transfers and eventual redemption. Map each event to the record that determines entitlement and to the party authorized to amend it.

How it works

A record date establishes which position is used for an entitlement under the instrument’s rules. Processing a coupon requires the eligible quantity, rate convention, currency, cut-off and payment path. On-chain transfers after the record date do not automatically answer who receives a payment calculated from an earlier position.

What to watch

The settlement asset also matters. Central bank money, a bank deposit claim and a stablecoin have different issuers and access arrangements. Two tokens moving on one platform do not by themselves prove that securities delivery and payment are legally final or conditional on one another.

Build your analysis

A lifecycle event needs an eligibility rule, an authoritative position record, a calculation and a payment or delivery instruction. Match these records using stable identifiers. Token movements after a record date can differ from the positions used for an entitlement. Which record prevails is a property of the instrument’s arrangements, not a universal rule of tokenisation.

Extend the workshop

Extend the coupon exercise with an incorrect position snapshot and a failed payment. Keep entitlement calculation separate from payment status so that an unpaid amount is not mistaken for an ineligible holder. Explain how the correction is authorised, how duplicates are prevented and which records prove that the final obligation has been discharged.

Understand the details

For a fictional bond coupon, preserve the eligible position snapshot, calculation rules, payment status and exceptions. Reconcile declared, paid and unpaid amounts separately. A transaction success message verifies one technical action, not the completeness of an entire corporate-action event.

Boundaries and common mistakes

Legal ownership, tax treatment and the authoritative register depend on the instrument and jurisdiction. Do not infer these solely from possession of a token.

Apply the lesson to a case

A fictional annual coupon is 4% on a nominal amount of 1,000 per token. An eligible holder owns ten tokens at the record date and sells two afterwards. Under rules using that record-date snapshot, calculate the gross coupon before any deductions.

What is the gross coupon under the stated rules?
