Overview
USDT, also styled USD₮, is Tether’s dollar-linked token. Like USDC, it can exist on multiple supported blockchains. The symbol identifies neither the sending network nor the exact token contract. An exchange balance can also be an internal record rather than a balance controlled by your own keys.
Mechanisms
Tether publishes circulation and reserve reporting. Its stated reserve backing should not be read as a promise that all reserves are cash in a bank account. Examine report dates, asset categories and the issuer’s applicable terms rather than equating a one-dollar target with an unconditional cash guarantee.
Risks and interpretation
Direct issuance and redemption have eligibility and operational conditions. A retail market sale depends on the venue and liquidity. Before depositing USDT, confirm that the platform supports the exact network, that deposits are available and that any required reference is included. Sending on a different chain is not corrected by an identical ticker.

Read these as connected concepts, not necessarily consecutive steps.
Read the explanation
Compare USDT and USDC using the same questions: who issues it, what the reserve report covers, which network holds the token, and how the holder exits. Do not infer identical reserves or legal terms from a shared dollar target. Read any dated report as a snapshot, and distinguish issuer reporting from a live guarantee about a trading venue.
Put the mechanism into context
In a fictional market, a holder sells 200 USDT at $0.99 each. Ignore fees and exchange rates. Direct issuer redemption has not been arranged. Calculate the proceeds of this market sale, then explain why the target price does not change that calculation.
